According to census, 2001 the gender development index in West Bengal is 0.549. Districts like Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Burdwan and CoochBehar obtain gender inequality as an alarming situation. The reservation for women has already been put in place in Panchayats and local bodies and experience of its working can only be described as encouraging.
It is very important to conduct gender sensitization workshops in school and in the community. Male and female are not the only genders. Gender is not binary. Hence, we should all be made aware and comfortable with the other sexes so that discrimination, female feticide, gender shaming etc. can be avoided in tomorrow’s society.
